Door Open or Closed
In road of life
there are times when the bend in
the road so sharp that you can not see what it looks
like ahead. We are at one of those curves. After
a recent visit with the orthopedic surgeon we
learned that Matt's knee pain is only going to get
worse. The cartilage is gone in his knee and each
step is grinding bone on bone. There is little the
doctor will do to help until Matt is in utter agony
and screaming for a total knee replacement. If
he were sixty five then he would be eligible
immediately
but since he is so young the doctor says he has to
wait until the pain is unbearable.
What does that mean for a
man who walks miles and miles each day over uneven
hilly terrain? As far as we can tell it means he
needs to back off the walking.
What about the farm?
Well, we love the farm and are resistant to give it
up. So please pray for us. In the meantime, we are
looking to hire someone to take the load off of Matt
with appropriate long
term options so we can continue to provide you with
yummy meat, eggs and milk for many years to come. We don't farm because we need the
money. We do it because we love it. May the good
Lord help us find another like-minded individual.
Help Wanted
We are looking for a farm
hand, an apprentice or a partner.
Do you have an interest in
farming but have no land or experience? Do you
value good quality food for families? Would you love
to have the responsibility of caring for animals?
We are looking for someone
with passion and commitment to the environment, to
the animals and to the families that will eat the
foods. We need someone who enjoys hard work
and the satisfaction that doing a good job brings.
Self-motivation is a essential as the chores must
get done without fail and on time.
It is a physically
demanding job requiring throwing a couple hundred
bales of hay, carrying 100 pounds of feed over the
fields, a lot of walking, etc...
It is an emotionally
demanding job requiring attention to every little
detail of the animals healthy, well being, feed
consumption, etc...
It is an intellectual job
calculating feed consumption, percent protein in
rations, learning new techniques and modifying them,
etc...
It is a repetitive job to
feed animals over and over again and can get boring;
every day the same 'ole thing...
It is an exciting job
seeing calves born, working with baby chicks,
watching the grass quality improve, working in the
great outdoors, hearing how much other families LOVE
the food that we provide, every day something new...
All training is provided
and no experience is required (although it would be
handy). Young (under 40), Christian man or couple
preferred; all others considered.
We feel it would be best to
live on or near the farm. Housing options discussed
on a case by case basis.
How could this work?
farm hand, does the day to
day chores but leaves the management and sales to
others
apprentice, does the day to
day chores, gets involved with management and sales,
leaves after agreed time commitment (two to five
years)
partner, does day to day
chores, integrated with management and sales, stays
on for many years
If you know a person that
is just the right fit, please forward this to them
and let them know we are looking.
If you read all this and
are not discouraged but full of excited enthusiasm
and hope then please prayerfully consider the
position and give us a call
at 573-335-1622. We would like to get to know you
better.
Mollie's Cafe and Bar
Mollie's in downtown Cape
Girardeau is serving up our chicken! If you
want them to continue to do so please bring them
your business and let them know you appreciate local
foods! 11 South Spanish Street.
Milk
With the milk availability being limited in the last
few weeks all will be glad to hear the worst is over. Please continue to
call and check but we haven't had to turn anyone away lately.
Turkey
What a year! As much
success as we are having with chicken we are not
having with Turkey. They are dying left and
right. So much for our new brooder ideas!
Good Lord willing we will have enough surviving to
fill the orders. Thank you for your patience.
Chicken
We
are having the most amazing year. We
discontinued Farmers Markets and yet we are nearly
sold out! Thank you all for your business and
support.
Chicken is still available fresh for the July pick
up. Please make your reservations as soon as
possible. The August pick up dates are nearly
sold out, only ten or twenty left.
In
light of these remarkable sales, we are strongly
considering adding in a September batch. For
those feeling like they didn't order quite
enough--let us know your thoughts.
Fresh
Chicken Pickup
If you are one of the lucky few that got their orders
in and are planning to pick up a chicken on July 11/12. Be sure to write it on
your calendar if you haven't already done so.
Bring your coolers on pick up day. Ice, too, if driving
a distance. We may have some to sell but we may not have much.
If you don't know how to cut up a chicken be sure to
ask. We will show you how on one of your chickens then you can practice at
home. You will want a sharp knife.

Great
Pyrenees Puppies
We still have one wonderful female left if you know of
anyone looking for a companion, yard dog or guard dog. The Pyrenees is
such a wonderful mellow dog; I just adore the breed.

Beef
Remember how frustrated I was with Benny, our bull, in
the last newsletter? Well, he is obviously done breeding now since he is
as calm as can be. I haven' t changed my mind though. He is
hamburger. I hope by the end of July or early August to have that yummy
100% grassfed beef that we all love so much in the freezer. Won't be too long
now...
Half Hogs
Available
We still have a few half hogs available for October.
Please let us know if you are interested. This tender, flavorful meat can
not be beat.
